FF.M FORSCHUNGSFELD material memories

Study programme: M.Sc. Architecture
Module: research field (6 CP)
Semester: winter 22/23
Teachers: Ken De Cooman, Theresa Zschäbitz
Participants: 16 persons
Registration: via RWTHonline

This elective is a group research project that maps the transformation processes of local raw materials in the Euregio Meuse–Rhine. It is focused on geosourced natural resources such as earth and stone, agrowaste and biobased additives. We explore the techniques of extraction and transformation from the territory to the factory to the site, and reflect on the material memories these create in a Euregional construction culture.

The main idea for this research elective is to map, narrate and probe material memories of the Euregio. The elective dives into the influence of territory and material phenomenology on architectural, constructional or spatial culture. The elective wants to promote touching and feeling as part of the creation of material memories which open up to transition potential for the future.

The elective will introduce principles of geosourced construction such as: Density, Friction, (Capillary) Cohesion, Lubrication, Gelification and other Bio-polymeric processes.

The aims are to learn from each other’s learnings, incorporate a tacit knowledge into research and reflect on the role of material culture in tackling the global crises of climate change and resource scarcity.

first meeting: friday 14th October 10h30,
weekly meetings: fridays 10h30 – 13h
at Reiffmuseum I room 1080 I UG 117
